Pizza Burger Bowl

Ingredients

Servings
  • 220 g raw Potato (7.8 oz raw)
  • 7 g Olive oil (½ tbsp)
  • 1 g Dried oregano (1 tsp)
  • 1 g Salt (⅛ tsp)
  • 0.3 g Black pepper (⅛ tsp)
  • 180 g raw Lean ground beef (90%) (6.3 oz raw)
  • 80 g raw Bell pepper (2.8 oz raw)
  • 1 g Garlic powder (⅓ tsp)
  • 70 g Tomato sauce (2.5 oz)
  • 30 g Turkey pepperoni (1.1 oz)
  • 40 g Mozzarella, shredded (1.4 oz)
  • 5 g raw Fresh basil (¼ cup chopped)

You'll need: Baking sheet, Parchment paper, Large frying pan with a lid, Spatula, Cutting board and knife.

Method

  1. Season the potatoes

Heat the oven to 220°C (425°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Cut the potato into 2 cm (¾ inch) cubes and toss them on the sheet with half the oil, the oregano and half the salt. Spread them out so they don't touch.

Space between the cubes is what makes them crisp. Crowded potatoes steam instead.

  2. Roast the potatoes

Roast the potatoes for 22–28 minutes, turning them once halfway, until golden and crisp at the edges. In an air fryer, cook them at 200°C (400°F) for 15–18 minutes, shaking the basket twice.

Push a fork into the biggest cube. If it slides in with no resistance, they're done.

  3. Brown the beef and pepper

While the potatoes roast, dice the bell pepper. Heat the rest of the oil in the pan over medium-high heat. Add the beef, bell pepper, garlic powder, black pepper and the rest of the salt. Break the beef up and cook for 7–9 minutes, until browned with no pink left. It should read 71°C (160°F).

Let the beef sit undisturbed for the first 2 minutes so it browns rather than steams.

  4. Add the pizza toppings

Turn the heat to low and stir the tomato sauce through the beef. Scatter the pepperoni and mozzarella over the top, cover with the lid and heat for about 2 minutes, until the cheese melts.

The lid traps steam, which melts the cheese evenly. Skip it and the top stays stringy and half-melted.

  5. Build the bowl

Spoon the potatoes into a bowl, top with the pizza beef and tear the basil over it.

Tear the basil at the last second. It bruises and turns dark if it sits on hot food.

Common mistake

Adding the cheese while the pan is still hot and sizzling. Turn the heat to low first, or the mozzarella turns oily instead of melting.

Storage

Fridge for up to 3 days, with the potatoes in their own container. Reheat the beef until steaming and crisp the potatoes in a hot oven or air fryer.

Swaps

  • Lean ground beef → Lean ground turkey (93%)A little leaner and just as good with the pizza flavors. Cook it to 74°C (165°F).
  • Potato → Sweet potatoSweeter and softer, and a nice contrast to the tomato. Roast about 5 minutes less.
